3 Things You Can’t Control and 4 Things You Can Control

As a basketball mental performance coach, I’ve seen firsthand how the right mindset can elevate an athlete’s game. Today, I want to address a crucial aspect of mental toughness: understanding the difference between what you can and cannot control.

3 Things You Can't Control:

  1. Parents: Their expectations and behavior are beyond your influence.

  2. Referees: Their calls can sometimes be unpredictable and out of your hands.

  3. Coaches' Playing Time Decisions: You can’t dictate when or how much you play.

4 Things You Can Control:

  1. Body Language: Maintain positive and confident body language, regardless of circumstances.

  2. Actions: Focus on what you do on the court—hustle, defense, and smart plays.

  3. Energy: Bring maximum energy and effort to every practice and game.

  4. Attitude: Keep a positive and resilient mindset, no matter the situation.

By channeling your energy into what you can control, you’ll find that your performance and overall experience improve significantly. This focus not only enhances your own game but also sets a powerful example for your teammates. When athletes concentrate on their body language, actions, energy, and attitude, they become more resilient, adaptable, and effective players.

Remember, the power to control your mindset lies within you. Let’s embrace this approach and watch how it transforms your game.
